DIY Cute & Comfy Delivery Gown

I vividly remember labor with Luke being #1 super painful (Pitocin and attempting the no epidural thing not recommended), and #2 exhausting (Going 14 hours on the PIT w/o an epidural with only like a 30 sec. break between contractions for 12 out of the 14 hours, also not recommended). Among this experience I also remember that dreaded, uncomfortable, bulky GOWN.  Since the plan was to not get the epidural, I was doing a lot of moving around and walking, bouncing on the ball, all fours, you name it.  The gown was my enemy because it was constantly getting in the way! Fast forward two years later, and I'm making my birth plan for Andie, and I told myself that I was not going to deal with that annoyance again.  Also me, "I'm not spending $40+ dollars on a gown that's going to get disgusting and that I'm not going to wear again!"  I took my self down to Walmart, and got the supplies to make my own Comfy, Affordable, and Cute delivery gown.  Below are the instructions on how I did it. BEST DECISION EVER.

  • I bought a T-shirt style gown from Walmart and it was less than $5
  • In the craft section, I found a small roll of Velcro Tape (adhesive on one side)
  • When I got home, I washed the gown.
  • After dried, I laid the gown out, front side down, and took my scissors and cut straight up the back of the gown (all the way up)
  • I took my Velcro tape and cut small squares, and placed four pieces down the back of the gown starting at the very top to the bottom to attach the sides.
  • Once I finished that, I cut the gown from the top of the shoulders starting at the neck line straight to the bottom of the sleeve (mine was short sleeved) and I did this to each side. I followed basically the same style that a regular hospital gown would be.
  • Applied the Velcro in three spots down each side of the arms.
  • Let the gown sit for a while so that the adhesive sticks really good before attaching the Velcro sides to see the finished product!
It was so functional, comfortable, and cute! I got so many compliments from the L&D nurses. It gave me a comfortable amount of coverage while laboring, for when people came in and out of my L&D suite. It worked perfectly for the uninterrupted hour of skin-to-skin after she was born! Below are some pictures so you can see for yourself!

Always,
